Chick-Flick Guide

If you love a rom-com then you’ve probably seen all the classics like The Proposal, She’s All That, and Notting Hill. You may find yourself asking “Where are my NEW Rom-Coms? I love Nicholas Sparks, but there has to be more out there!”

Well my sweet friend, I am here for you. Here is an updated list of chick-flick movies you might not have heard of but you will absolutely LOVE! I have them categorized by “vibe” because we all know that’s how we really choose a romantic movie or book.

Your Classic Rom-Com. You want to laugh, see some classic romantic tropes, and have a good time!

This movie is absolutely hilarious and I love it! It is a different telling of Romeo and Juliet. Its perfect if you’re looking for a lighthearted and funny rom-com.

I would classify this as much more of an adult movie.

As with all of these, I recommend watching the trailer to see if it’s something you feel comfortable watching. I find it humorous even if the plot is a little weak.

Romantic, fun, woman-empowering. Plus the budget was huge so it is fun to watch it just for the sets and location.

This movie has Jennifer Coolidge in it… need I say more?

(If you need more words- its about a woman who’s obsessed with Jane Austen books and she goes to a Jane Austen retreat experience. There’s a hot guy. Oh, and did I mention Jennifer Coolidge?)

This one is one of my go-to’s for a group movie.

It’s about a girl who lets a guy say they slept together to stop his classmates from bullying him. Then it gets out of hand because all these guys start asking if they can make things up about her to make them look cool. The whole movie is about her telling the story of how one lie got her into such a big mess. Its funny, lighthearted, and has Stanley Tucci.

Best friends to lovers trope. They agree to be each others dates to the many summer weddings they have to attend. I like its subtle humor and although the plot is somewhat questionable… it’s still a good time.

I want it stated that I liked this movie long before Glen Powell was the “It Boy”. It’s a hilarious story of two assistants setting up their crazy bosses so they can get a break.

This is a “groundhog day” love story with your classic time loop. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would after just watching the trailer. The main characters’ chemistry was believable to me.

More comedy centered with romantic elements. These are truly “turn your brain off” just laugh at the ridiculousness, but it ends and you think “That was fun”.

Plot summary: Our leads are getting married in the Philippians when their wedding is overtaken by pirates. It’s ridiculous but hilarious… and it has Jennifer Coolidge. Need I say more?

This one is a wild ride but I found myself enjoying it the whole time. This film walked so “Argylle” could run because they have very similar plots at the beginning.

This movie is what I imagine being on acid would feel like… but in a good way. I had a surprisingly good time and although the plot was all over the place, it somehow worked. I laughed a lot and gave a whole 10min review on my podcast episode titled “Down with the Utah Grid System”.

These ones are a bit slower and have interesting plots or classic tropes with a twist.

Great if you want to have a movie with a bit more discussion after you finish.

This is your classic movie of mistaken identity and social class- think “Monte Carlo” but with a bit of a twist in everyone’s reactions to the lying which I found fun.

I LOVE how fresh and new this movie feels. They took a classic trope of meeting someone on a plane and really made it their own. I had the best time watching this. Its romantic, unexpected, and just a delightful young romance movie.

The trailer really does a great job showing the plot so I recommend watching it. It feels like a covid movie becuase you really only have 2 people in it, but those two people are Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence-

so its great.

If you’ve seen my top movies list then you’d know this is my favorite movie of all time. Fair warning it’s very slow, slightly awkward (which I love) and has the best ending ever which is why its my favorite.

If you know me, you KNOW I love movies that deal with time. Time travel, frozen time, looped time, I'm here for all of it.

This movie falls into the “frozen-time” category but not in a Groundhog Day way (say that 10 times fast). It is the story of Adaline who never ages and it’s everything that you could look for in a slow-paced romance. Plus Blake Lively is beautiful and the guy is cute, so that’s always a plus.

I absolutely love the concept of this movie. You get to see the life of one woman play out in two different realities. One where she gets pregnant and one where she doesn’t.

I love the conversation it stirs about life and our decisions.

In your feels romantic movies. These have deeper and more serious themes and *aren’t* always tied up in a pretty bow at the end, but they are still SO good. (Best to watch when you are on your period and feel like crying or just sitting in a bit of sadness).

Wow is this movie great! It deals really well with grief and showing it realistically. It also has my favorite element… TIME TRAVEL!!! When the main character listens to certain songs it transports her back in time to be with her boyfriend before he died. Such an interesting fresh plot that I’ve never seen before. Oh and the music is amazing!

Once again we have a movie that deals with grief (what can I say, once your friends die you start to really relate to this kind of sadness. I love when grief is shown in an honest light highlighting just how difficult it is and how slow it can be to move forward again). This movie made me cry and had me all up in my feels. Its not the most amazing movie ever made and rushed a bit of the romance, but I still really enjoy it and recommend it.

First off- don’t ever read the book cause it’s trash. You will end up strongly disliking the main character at one point. But I’m in it for Tony and Tony alone. Ok, Tony and the woman who owns the boarding house. They make it all worth it.

I think it’s a beautiful story of immigration and love (even if it has questionable ethics in the middle).

Christmas Rom-Coms! Because who doesn’t love a holiday romance?!

I find this movie hilarious and extremely delightful. You have our two main leads who break up, he’s busy with work so he won’t be going home for Xmas, but the family still loves his ex so they invite her without telling him. He shows up… and now its a competition for who the family loves more.

A true classic. You have a woman from America and a woman from England who decide to switch houses for Christmas. Jude Law is in it and he is just perfection, and Jack Black has you falling for him in a surprising twist you probably didn’t see coming after watching Nacho Libre.

This is probably my favorite LGBTQ+ movie and I watch it every Christmas. Kristen Stewart is, and always will be, my celebrity girl crush and I love her in this movie.

This is an unexpected good time. I honestly don’t know how to describe the plot without giving it away but it is fun, sweet, and has one of my favorite actresses- Zoey Deutch!

The Classics If you havent seen these yet… its time you pressed play.

This is one of the most iconic movies to ever exist. The playlist is fire, the acting is amazing, and the plot… I mean its based on Anna Wintour who runs the Met Gala and she is played by Meryl Streep. If I were being extremely critical idk if I’d fully say its a “Romance” movie but it does feel like it qualifies to be defined as a chick-flick. Ya know what I mean?

This is one of the cutest stories to ever exist! I read the book in 6th grade and it is truely timeless. It is an innocent and adorable love story of two kids. An enemies to lovers story that made us all love the trope for years to come. It is 100% worth watching.
